On My Knees (Bridge #1) by Meredith Wild
Haunted by the responsibility of caring for her troubled family, Maya Jacobs gave the only answer she could when Cameron asked her to marry him. Years later, entrenched in a soulless professional routine, she distracts herself from the lingering regret of her decision with a “work hard, play hard” lifestyle that guarantees no man will ever find his way into her heart again.
Cameron Bridge has spent the past five years married to the military, trying to escape the painful memory of losing Maya. After fighting his own war in the desert, he starts a new life in New York City, with his siblings, Olivia and Darren, by his side.
When fate brings Maya back to him in the heart of a city filled with its own hopes and shadows, can Cameron find the girl he once loved in the woman she’s become?
On My Knees is the first novel in the Bridge series with Cameron and Maya’s story. Maya and Cameron have a history that with one question came to a halt. They both may have walked away but they didn’t let go. Over five years of absence from one another’s lives, Maya has built a tough exterior to not let love break her again. Their craving and need was emotionally and physically draining for me. The fighting and banter soothed these wounds for me but I felt the knife just twisting deeper and deeper with Maya’s walls. Cameron is there…always! He helps rid Maya of her vices and possessively urges Maya to run to him instead of escaping and running away. I felt connected to Maya and Cameron with the help of alternating POVs and how their words and internal dialogue didn’t hold back on their thoughts and feelings. We got plenty of backstory that speared my reading to find the answers for Cameron and Maya. The storyline was fluid and moving and their history along with their present had me rooting for their happiness. The ended came abruptly, yet ended in a respectful place. There’s no cliffhanger, just hope for more of their story. The Bridge family series will continue with Darren (Cameron’s brother) and Vanessa (Maya’s best friend) in Into the Fire. I can’t wait to read more in this group. Give this a try and find your next crush! Rating: 4 stars
What a passionate…and I mean passionate journey Cameron and Maya will take you on in On My Knees. A journey of heartbreak, passion, and love and all the while trying to keep secrets hidden and hearts protected. A story so well written that I couldn’t decide who I was madder at, or whose side I wanted to take, or whose qualities I found more endearing. It was so easy for me to grasp both characters, feel their emotions, their pain, their hesitation and the love they feel for each other. Add in a jerk of a boss, a co-worker with a hidden agenda, a best friend who finally talks some sense into Maya, Cameron’s playboy brother and his witty banter, and his overprotective sister all wrapped up in the pages of On My Knees, makes for a wonderful read. Cameron’s persistence and patience will have you sighing out loud as well as Maya’s addiction, that she doesn’t think is a problem, will leave you frustrated with some of her actions. Yet in the end, will have you believing in the phrase “love is patient.”
