Book Info:

A new love will test the boundaries of passion between a privileged boy next door and the tattooed, blue-haired girl who helps him embrace his wild side…

Nate has developed quite a playboy reputation around campus. It’s not that he doesn’t respect or trust women; he doesn’t trust himself. The men in Nate’s family are prone to abusive behavior—a dirty secret that Nate’s been running from his entire life—so Nate doesn’t do relationships. But he can’t help himself around one girl…

Jessie is strong, independent, and works at a tattoo parlor. Nate can’t resist getting close to her, even if it’s strictly a friendship. But it doesn’t take long for Nate to admit that what he wants with Jessie is more than just friendly.

With Jessie, he can be himself and explore what he’s always felt was a terrifying darkness inside him. Even when Nate begins to crave her in a way that both shocks and horrifies him, Jessie still wants to know every part of him. Testing their boundaries together will take a trust that could render them inseparable… or tear them apart.

Review

In this Between Breaths installment, we get Nate and Jessie’s story. Jessie is your balanced, comfortable-in-her-own-skin, feisty woman whereas Nate is fighting a side of himself that he finds ‘evil’ due to his family upbringing. Their story dragged for me in the middle as Nate was fought against opening up and working through his “stuff”. The push and pull, the longing and hesitance had me gritting my teeth because I wanted to see Nate moving forward, not being held back. He’d test the waters and then pull back. BUT what this offered to us (more importantly) was an inside look at how these powerful, emotion-filled encounters with Jessie scared the shit out of him. What I wanted to see more of was how their relationship played out after he worked through his “stuff”, coming to the realization that balance is beauty. My absolute favorite parts of the entire book was their weekend bridge picture-taking getaway and the power behind what Jessie’s Dad told her to promise him! This brings me to what I love about Christina’s writing, how she ties in the main characters’ families gives me a complete picture of who they are and how this effects the choices they make and any doubts or feelings that arise in various situations. Her writing not only has me falling for the main characters but attributes and personalities of their family members as well, and longing for their own HEAs. Nate and Jessie find their balance, and with their story ending in an HEA, I couldn’t have ended it better. Rating: 3.5 stars
