This is the first book in the Covington Cove series, starring Cole and Mia. Mia has raised her moderately down syndrome teenage sister, Ginny since Ginny was little. Mia’s from the “wrong side of town”, her mother the hired help, and all Mia longs for are compliments that she’s never heard. Cole has always fought against what was expected, from his parents or rules in general. But he and Mia are torn apart and this is their journey of finding their way back home. Mia and Cole are struggling to find happiness. Family struggles, financial struggles, flashbacks, nightmares, and fear play crucial roles in what’s holding Mia and Cole in limbo. Mia is a registered nurse hired to bring Cole back to himself as he’s suffering from PTSD after his honorable discharge from the Army. Mia takes charge well and her connection with Cole from when they were teens placed her in more of a caregiving role than a nurse role through my observation of their relationship. Cole also seemed to appear back to his “normal self” in what seemed an unrealistic timeframe. There are crucial discussions to be had between Mia and Cole and I felt as though these were held off at times they could’ve been brought to attention, but instead added fluff in unnecessary areas. I appreciate Cole’s dedication and strides towards decreasing his traumatic symptoms. I wanted more time with Ginny because she lit up my face whenever she was present. There’s suffering, grief, pain, evil parents, desire, and funny banter that kept me interested in how their journey would come together. Give Cole a try and find your next book crush!
